چکیده

Since 1942, when Morison and Dempsey' first published the finding that stimulation of certain subcortical structures in the region of the internal medullary lamina resulted in widely distributed "rhythmically recurrent cortical potentials," there has been a steadily increasing interest in the physiological and anatomical parameters of this so-called "recruiting response." Subsequent investigations by Jasper'0 and by Starzl and Magoun" bore out, in general, the initial results of Morison and Dempsey but differed to a certain degree as to which cortical areas were affected and which subcortical structures, when stimulated, elicited the "recruiting response." The group of subcortical structures includes, according to most investigators, the midline and intralaminar nuclei, the centrum medianum, the anterior nucleus, and the anterior portions of the reticular complex of the thalamus. However, cortical activation has also been reported by some authors upon stimulation of the n. ventralis anterior,a n. medialis dorsalis,1 n. reuniens,l° n. parafascicularis," n. postero-lateralis," and the pulvinar.' It has been postulated that the nuclei from which recruiting phenomenon can be elicited are the diencephalic components of a "central activating system"'t or "centrencephalic system"'t which would, by modulating all

Re-examination of the thalamostriatal projections in the rat with retrograde tracers.

Topographical arrangements of thalamostriatal projection neurons was examined in the rat by the retrograde tract-tracing method. After injecting Fluoro-Gold (FG) and/or cholera toxin beta-subunit (CTB) in different regions of the caudate-putamen (CPu), distribution of retrogradely labeled neurons was observed in the thalamus. The main findings were as follows: (1) Retrogradely labeled neurons w...

Serotonergic fibers distribution in the midline and intralaminar thalamic nuclei in the rock cavy (Kerodon rupestris)

The thalamic midline/intralaminar complex is part of the higher-order thalamus, which receives little sensory input, and instead forms extensive cortico-thalamo-cortical pathways. The midline thalamic nuclei connect with the medial prefrontal cortex and the medial temporal lobe. On the other hand, the intralaminar nuclei connect with the fronto-parietal cortex. Taking into account this connecti...

Projections of the median raphe nucleus in the rat.

No previous report in any species has examined comprehensively the projections of the median raphe (MR) nucleus with modern tracing techniques. The present report represents an in depth analysis of the projections of MR by use of the anterograde anatomical tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin. MR fibers descend along the midline within the brainstem and mainly ascend within the medial fore...

A role for midline and intralaminar thalamus in the associative blocking of Pavlovian fear conditioning

Fear learning occurs in response to positive prediction error, when the expected outcome of a conditioning trial exceeds that predicted by the conditioned stimuli present. This role for error in Pavlovian association formation is best exemplified by the phenomenon of associative blocking, whereby prior fear conditioning of conditioned stimulus (CS) A is able to prevent learning to CSB when they...
